Young Hiker Rescued After Four-Day Ordeal in Picos de Europa

In a dramatic and relief-filled conclusion, a 23-year-old hiker from León, Spain, was rescued on Friday after a grueling four-day search operation in the treacherous Picos de Europa mountain range in Asturias.

The Incident

The young man, identified as Senén Turienzo, embarked on a hike through the challenging terrain between Bejes, Cantabria, and Covadonga, Asturias, an area renowned for its steep drops and perilous paths. His family lost contact with him two days before Christmas, prompting an immediate alert to the authorities.

Intensive Search Operation

Emergency services, including the Guardia Civil's GREIM unit and the Emergency Services of the Principality of Asturias (SEPA), launched a comprehensive search operation. The rescue teams utilized advanced technology, such as the Lifeseeker system, which captures active mobile phone signals to locate lost hikers. Additionally, monitoring helicopters were deployed to scour the region from above.

The breakthrough came when rescue teams heard cries for help coming from the Jou de los Boches area in Cabrales. A medical helicopter was swiftly dispatched to the location, ensuring the safe evacuation of the injured hiker.

Turienzo was found with severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures. Despite the critical condition, he was confirmed to be stable and is currently receiving medical treatment at the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA).
