New Tram Line Along Diagonal in Barcelona to Launch on November 9

In a significant development for the public transportation system in Barcelona, the new tram line connecting Plaça de Glòries and Verdaguer along the Diagonal is set to be inaugurated on November 9, 2024. This announcement was made by Laia Bonet, the Deputy Mayor of Barcelona, and Manel Nadal, the Secretary of Mobility and Infrastructure of the Generalitat (the regional government of Catalonia).

Years of Anticipation and Construction

After more than two and a half years of construction, the new tram line will introduce three new stops: Monumental, Sicília, and Verdaguer. This expansion is part of a broader effort to enhance mobility and reduce traffic congestion in the city.

Impact on Commuters and Traffic

The new service is expected to attract 24,000 new users and remove approximately 2,000 cars from the central section of the Diagonal. This reduction in car traffic is a key goal of the city's mobility strategy, aiming to make Barcelona a more sustainable and environmentally friendly city.

Trial Period and Route Changes

To prepare for the launch, trial runs of the tram began on October 21, 2024, and will continue for three weeks. During this period, there will be changes to the routes of the T4, T5, and T6 tram lines. The T4 line will only operate between Glòries and the Sant Adrià station, while the T5 and T6 lines will extend their routes along the Meridiana and add four new permanent stops: Auditori Teatre Nacional, Marina, Wellington, and Ciutadella Vila Olímpica. These stops, previously part of the T4 line, will now be served by the T5 and T6 lines. In return, the T4 line will be responsible for reaching Verdaguer.
