Major Road Rehabilitation Project Underway on Tenerife’s TF-1 Highway

In a significant move to enhance road safety and infrastructure, the Cabildo de Tenerife has initiated a comprehensive rehabilitation project on the TF-1 highway, a critical arterial road connecting several key municipalities on the island.

Project Scope and Investment

The refurbishment works, which began in November 2024, are slated to conclude by March 2025, with a substantial investment of 30 million euros. This project focuses on a 24-kilometer stretch of the TF-1 highway, spanning the areas of Arico, Fasnia, and Güímar. This section of the highway is particularly important, as it accommodates up to 70,000 vehicles daily.

Enhancements and Safety Measures

The rehabilitation project encompasses a range of improvements aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency. Key aspects include the revamping of the road surface, the installation of sound barriers along the road edges, the repainting of signage, and the addition of safety barriers. These measures are designed to ensure smoother and safer travel for the thousands of motorists who use this route daily.

Broader Infrastructure Initiatives

This project is part of a larger initiative by the Cabildo de Tenerife to modernize and enhance the island's road network. In 2024, the island authority allocated a total of 300 million euros to improve approximately 400 kilometers of roads across Tenerife. This extensive plan aims to better connect the island, reduce travel times, and enhance overall safety for both residents and visitors.

Additional Projects in La Laguna and Beyond

In addition to the TF-1 rehabilitation, the Cabildo has also focused on other critical infrastructure projects. In the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, an investment of 24 million euros has been dedicated to addressing local demands and alleviating traffic bottlenecks, particularly in the Father Anchieta area. The Padre Anchieta pedestrian ring, currently under construction, is a significant project with a 10 million euro investment, aimed at reducing congestion and enhancing safety for the over 20,000 students who travel through the area daily.

Other notable projects include the refurbishment of the TF-12 roadway in Cruz del Carmen within the Anaga Rural Park, and improvements to the TF-13 in Tacoronte, La Laguna, and Canteras, which will facilitate smoother traffic flow and reduce waiting times during peak hours.

Commitment to Quality Infrastructure

Rosa Dávila, the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, has emphasized the commitment to providing quality infrastructure that facilitates mobility and shortens travel times. "We are committed to ensuring the safety of both residents and visitors to Tenerife," she stated, highlighting the evident need to enhance the roadways given the high demand and daily usage.

Impact on Mobility and Connectivity

The completion of these projects, including the TF-1 rehabilitation and other initiatives such as the Chafiras-Oroteanda link and the Erjos tunnel, will significantly enhance mobility and connectivity across Tenerife. The Erjos tunnel, the longest in the Canary Islands at 5,095 meters, is part of a larger project to connect the northern and southern parts of the island, reducing travel times and fostering territorial cohesion.

As the island continues to grow and attract visitors, these infrastructure improvements are crucial for maintaining a high standard of living and ensuring safe, efficient travel for all.
