Alfoz de Lloredo Gears Up for a Festive and Commemorative Christmas Season
The municipality of Alfoz de Lloredo in Cantabria, Spain, is preparing to celebrate the Christmas season with a plethora of activities, contests, and events that cater to all ages and interests.
Illumination and Tribute
On Saturday, December 7, the town will kick off its Christmas celebrations with the encendido del alumbrado navideño (Christmas lighting) in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento of Novales at 19:00 hours. This year, the event will honor the victims of the recent DANA (Dense Airborne Water) weather phenomenon that affected the region. The ceremony will be led by local residents who were impacted by the DANA[2].
Festive Contests and Workshops
Children and adults alike can participate in various contests and workshops. The Concurso de Tarjetas Navideñas (Christmas Card Contest) is open to children in infant and primary education, with submissions accepted until November 29. Winners will be announced on December 7, during the lighting ceremony, preceded by an infantile show and followed by fireworks and a chocolatada (hot chocolate distribution)[1].
For those with a flair for decoration, the Concurso de Belenes y Decoración Navideña (Nativity Scene and Christmas Decoration Contest) is accepting registrations until December 13. The judging will take place on December 16 and 17, with prizes awarded on December 20 at the Ayuntamiento's salón de Plenos[1].
Community Events
The town has organized several community events to foster a festive atmosphere. On December 9, residents can enjoy the Ruta de belenes municipales (Municipal Nativity Scene Route), which includes stops at various landmarks such as the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Novales, the Ermita de San Roque in Cóbreces, and other significant locations[1].
From December 27 to 29, the Fin de semana infantil de Alfoz (Alfoz Children's Weekend) will take place at the polideportivo in Cóbreces, featuring karts, inflatables, and other fun activities. Additionally, a Christmas daycare service, Ludoteca de Navidad, will be available from December 23 to January 7 at the Colegio Quirós in Cóbreces, providing care from 9:00 to 14:00, with extended hours for early risers and latecomers[1].
Homage to the Elderly and New Year's Eve Run
On December 28, the town will pay tribute to its elderly residents with a special event at the centro Quirós in Cóbreces, featuring bingo, a snack, and various performances. For the more athletic, the San Silvestre run will take place on December 30 in Toñanes, starting at 11:30 hours[1].
Nacimiento Viviente and Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos
The festive season will culminate on January 5 with the Nacimiento Viviente (Living Nativity Scene) presented by the Asociación San Millán de Novales at the Iglesia de Novales. Immediately following, the Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos (Parade of the Three Wise Men) will make its way to Cóbreces, organized by the Asociación Santa Ana, where everyone can enjoy chocolate and celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men[1].
